On March 14 and 15, Seal Days will be held at the Riga National Zoo.
"Seal Days" are held because in March it becomes increasingly common to encounter seal pups on the beach.
During the "Seal Days," you will have the opportunity to learn more about the life, development, and challenges faced by seals in the wild, as well as receive practical advice on what to do if you accidentally encounter a seal pup on the beach.
Spring is a special time for seals, as it is the period of giving birth to pups and their first steps towards independence. "Seal Days" will allow you to get to know gray seals better, learn about their daily lives, habits, and adaptations to life in the water.
When encountering a seal pup on the shore, the most important thing is to keep at least 50 meters away from it.
For seals, the beach is a resting place where they regain strength before returning to the sea. When walking your dog, always keep it on a leash along the coast.
If you discover an injured or severely emaciated seal, you should report it to the Nature Conservation Agency. Approaching it or attempting to help may do more harm than good.
The Riga National Zoo has long been engaged in seal rehabilitation, collaborating with coastal municipalities and the Nature Conservation Agency. Both emaciated and injured seal pups arrive at the zoo. After recovery and weight gain, they are released back into the wild.
