At the end of May, the Daugavpils Theatre will come to Riga for a tour and present the play 'The Elder Son'. It will be shown at the Arkada hall of the Mikhail Chekhov Riga Russian Theatre on May 25, 26, and 27 at 19:00.

The spring tour performances of the Daugavpils Theatre in Riga have already become a long-standing tradition. This time, the Daugavpils Theatre will meet its audience in the capital at the new Chekhov Theatre building — the Arkada hall — and will present the comedy 'The Elder Son' — one of the most popular productions among the public, tickets for which sell out in a matter of minutes even three years after its premiere in Daugavpils.

"One of the reasons for the popularity of the play is the magnificent performance of the actors, which has also received high praise from critics: in 2023, Miroslav Blakunov was nominated for the 'Spēlmaņu nakts' award in the 'Actor of the Year' category, while Mikhail Samodakhov was nominated for the 'Actor of the Year in a Supporting Role' award," emphasizes the theatre.

'The Elder Son' is one of five plays by Russian playwright Alexander Vampilov (1937 – 1972), created during his short and tragic life. He is also the author of the plays 'Farewell in June', 'Duck Hunting', 'Last Summer in Chulimsk', and 'Provincial Anecdotes'. In his works, Vampilov masterfully depicted the complex, contradictory essence of humanity, showing how the comic and the tragic intertwine in everyday life. He is often compared to Chekhov and characterized as one of the most outstanding playwrights of the 20th century.

As noted by the director of the play, Oleg Shaposhnikov, 'The Elder Son' is high-quality dramaturgy, with no minor roles; each character has a multi-layered and captivating story.
