Latvia to Sign Agreement with France on Cooperation in Cinematography

On February 3, the government supported the initiative of the Ministry of Culture (MC) to conclude a bilateral agreement on co-production of films with France to promote cooperation and international competitiveness between the creative industries of the two countries.

Currently, Latvia does not have a bilateral agreement with France in this area, which limits cooperation, unlike Lithuania and Estonia, where such agreements have already been concluded, according to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The purpose of the agreement is to promote more active cooperation between Latvian and French filmmakers by establishing common principles and conditions for investment in joint projects. It stipulates that investments from each party can range from 20% to 80% of the total budget for the joint production, but in exceptional cases, film centers may allow a reduction in investments to 10%.

The signing of the agreement is scheduled for this month in Paris during the Baltic Film Days, an event where the latest and most successful films from the Baltic countries will be presented to the French audience.

The National Film Center will be responsible for coordinating the implementation of the contract in Latvia. The contract is concluded for an indefinite period, and its execution will comply with the provisions on supporting commercial activities.
