The Chinese Plush Menagerie Advances: Sony Pictures Adapts the Toy Series 'Labubu'

If there are still people on the planet unfamiliar with the phenomenon of 'Labubu' — a line of adorably ugly plush monsters — Sony Pictures will reach them too.

Sony has acquired the rights to adapt the Chinese puppet brand with a quite obvious goal — to release a film, and ideally, to launch a full-fledged franchise.

The project currently has no producers or directors, but their appearance is just a matter of time. According to sources, at this stage, the format of the future adaptation has not even been determined: it could be either a live-action film or an animated feature. The decision will be made during the development process.

According to experts, the overwhelming popularity of 'Labubu' can be explained by two reasons. First, the toys are sold 'blind' — the buyer only discovers which specific monster they have received after opening the packaging. This approach fuels interest and demand, as well as contributes to the development of a secondary market where collectors are willing to pay substantial sums for the desired specimens.

The second reason is the support from celebrities on social media. For instance, Lisa, a member of the K-pop group Blackpink, uses 'Labubu' as a fashionable accessory.

Initially, this plush epidemic took over the Asian market and then spread to other regions of the world. Labubu is the name of the main monster in the series. In addition to it, there are Zimomo, Mokoko, and Taikoko.
