The painting by the great Rubens, which was considered lost for 4 centuries, was sold at auction

The painting had been considered lost for more than four centuries, and it was discovered a year ago in a Paris mansion. And now, in early December, the canvas by Peter Paul Rubens was sold at auction in Versailles for 2.3 million euros.

The painting, according to art historians, is not quite typical of the Flemish master's work: he often painted scenes of the crucifixion, but the body of the deceased Christ with a bloody wound is hardly a common occurrence for the artist.

Representatives of the auction house noted that the theme of death limited the painting's value — bidding started at 500,000 euros — which otherwise would have been valued at a huge sum: after all, the canvas had been considered lost for more than four centuries (since 1613).

A year was spent proving the authenticity of the canvas: experts conducted X-rays and also proved that the paints used are characteristic of the Flemish artist.
