Can Cats and Dogs Follow a Vegetarian Diet?

Experts are increasingly raising the question of the need to reduce meat consumption due to its impact on the environment. But what about pets? Can they be fed vegetarian food, considering that the production of their food also harms the planet, asks Popular Mechanics.

Research by Professor of Veterinary Medicine Andrew Knight from the University of Winchester, UK, shows that the health of cats and dogs does not deteriorate when using a plant-based diet. However, the professor emphasizes that such feeds must be carefully formulated with the addition of necessary synthetic nutrients.

Knight conducted his research following a warning from UK authorities to pet owners that plant-based diets could violate the Animal Welfare Act. If an owner cannot provide their pet with proper nutrition that meets its needs, they face a fine of £20,000 or 51 weeks of imprisonment.

The problem with a vegetarian diet is that it can disrupt the balance of nutrients, leading to the risk of weight loss and the development of various diseases.

This is especially true for cats, which have specific needs that are not met by plant foods. Cats cannot produce certain proteins, such as taurine, and obtain it only from food sources like beef, chicken, and fish. This is because, in nature, wild cats are obligate carnivores.

Dogs, on the other hand, are less finicky. They were domesticated thousands of years ago and have adapted to a diet that contains less protein and more plant starch.

Nevertheless, most pet cats and dogs receive dry or wet food. Knight's research results show that plant-based pet foods can be just as nutritious as meat products.

Thus, dogs, cats, and other animals need certain nutrients rather than specific products. If manufacturers add the necessary substances to plant-based feeds, animals can remain healthy and energetic.
