How Does Sterilization Affect a Cat's Character?

What contraindications exist for sterilization? Does this procedure affect the character and lifespan of the animal?

- Sterilization and castration are contraindicated in the presence of heart, liver, and kidney diseases, as well as viral infections, bronchitis, pneumonia, and asthma. Before anesthesia, it is recommended to perform an echocardiogram, which significantly reduces the risks associated with the surgery. It is also advisable to conduct a biochemical blood test. It is important to remember an 8-hour fasting diet before the surgery, as anesthesia can cause vomiting, which poses a danger. Water can be given during this time.

The optimal age for sterilization is 7-9 months, when the body is sufficiently developed and can tolerate the surgical intervention well,” explains veterinarian Dmitry Parkhomov. “As for changes in character, it may change only in some animals. Some become more affectionate, while others may become lethargic, which is often related to weight gain. Therefore, it is important to monitor their diet, as appetite may increase after the surgery. Sterilization does not affect lifespan; this is a myth.
