7.4 Million Livestock Lost in Mongolia

By early May, Mongolia faced the loss of 7.4 million livestock due to feed shortages, reported Dashzevegyn Amarbayasgalan, head of the Mongolian government administration, during a meeting with livestock breeders in the Orkhon aimag.

“This winter, snow covered 90% of our country's territory. Climate change and frequent snowfalls have led to the loss of 7.4 million livestock in Mongolia to date, and 5,000 households have lost more than 70% of their herds,” noted the head of the government secretariat.

Adverse weather conditions causing feed shortages in Mongolia are known as dzuds. Black dzud is characterized by dry summers and cold winters, while white dzud occurs during significant snowfalls when animals struggle to reach forage. When heavy rains are followed by severe frosts, an iron or ice dzud occurs. In recent years, dzuds have followed one after another and have taken on the character of natural disasters.
