The Most Popular Dog Breed in the U.S. Has Been Determined

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has released a list of the most popular dog breeds among U.S. residents. French Bulldogs took first place, becoming the most frequently registered breed in the club last year.

By the end of 2023, Americans adopted nearly 98,500 dogs of this breed. In comparison, 108,000 French Bulldogs were registered in 2022.

Breeders are not sharing the excitement about this breed taking first place in popularity among Americans. On one hand, the demand for these animals is understandable: they are low-maintenance and well-suited for apartment living. On the other hand, these dogs have certain issues. The anatomical features of animals with shortened snouts can lead to breathing difficulties and shortness of breath during physical activity.

American breeders express concerns that the rise in popularity of the breed will lead to an increase in people wanting to breed French Bulldogs not for the sake of preserving their quality, but out of a desire for profit. “This is really a troubling time,” said French Bulldog breeder Naneis Bucci in an interview with Fox News.

Naneis Bucci noted that in breeding Bulldogs, she adheres to AKC standards and conducts necessary health tests before mating. She worries that “breeders” working for profit do not care about the health of the animals. Due to such incompetent specialists, there may be repercussions against the entire breed.

“I don’t want to be punished for trying to breed dogs of this breed correctly,” she added.

French Bulldogs displaced Labrador Retrievers last year, which held the top spot in 2022. Currently, Labradors are in second place.

The top five most popular breeds also include Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, and Poodles. In the top ten are Dachshunds, Bulldogs, Beagles, Rottweilers, and German Shorthaired Pointers. Notably, Dachshunds have not risen this high in the rankings for the past twenty years, according to the dog club.

The club also reminded that ten years ago, Yorkshire Terriers and Boxers were among the most popular breeds. For half a century, the third most popular breed was the Irish Setter, which now ranks only 76th.
