Scientists Discover Method to Enhance Dogs' Cognitive Abilities

Researchers from Aberystwyth University (Wales) found that training pet dogs in scent recognition enhances their cognitive abilities and helps them more effectively tackle certain cognitive tasks. This is reported by the scientific portal phys.org.

According to the publication, researchers conducted a study involving pet dogs of various ages and training levels. The animals were presented with two tasks requiring impulse control: the 'Bypass' exercise and a task for switching attention between objects. The results showed that dogs trained in scent recognition performed better on these tasks than their untrained counterparts.

Based on the data obtained, the researchers concluded that training dogs in scent work may improve their ability to avoid impulsive actions when performing certain tasks.

Furthermore, it is suggested that this ability positively impacts the development of problem-solving skills in dogs. According to the scientists, training in scent recognition could be an effective way for owners to correct undesirable behavior in their pets.

The results of the study were published in the journal Animals.
