Why Do Cats Bring Their Prey Home?

Many cat owners have encountered their pets bringing home dead rodents. This behavior can be puzzling: why would a cat kill prey when its bowl is full of food?

In fact, cats are natural hunters. Even when domesticated, they have retained their instincts and continue to hunt. It is estimated that cats kill billions of small animals each year.

Interestingly, many furry predators do not eat their prey. For example, sterilized females are more likely to bring such a "gift" home. This is associated with the fact that in the wild, mother cats teach their kittens to hunt by bringing them dead or injured prey. In modern conditions, a domestic cat, deprived of kittens, continues to behave in this way, perceiving its owners as its clumsy "offspring."

Thus, by bringing a mouse to the doorstep, the pet plays the role of a mentor. It is not worth punishing the cat for this; just understand that these are its instincts of survival and care.
