The Aesthetic Element: Why Do Hens and Roosters Need a Comb on Their Heads?

The comb gives these birds attractiveness. Its size can distinguish between female and male. But what is the true reason for the appearance of such ornaments in hens and roosters during the process of evolution?

Many bird species exhibit unique ornaments that have evolved over time. For some, it may be a bright tail, while for others, it is a crest on the head. These features make each type of animal unique, allowing them to stand out among others. However, such ornaments can sometimes lead to problems, as the bright colors of a tail or growths on the head make birds more visible to predators.

Despite the risks, the absence of such characteristics can pose an even greater danger for animals — it complicates the search for a mate. It is believed that bright combs and tails serve to attract the attention of females. The more attractive a male is, the higher the likelihood that a female will choose him for mating in order to produce higher quality offspring. This process is known as sexual selection.

This theory was proposed by Charles Darwin, who believed that sexual selection is a part of natural selection. However, later studies have shown that the situation in chickens and roosters is more complex. The comb not only demonstrates a male's attractiveness to a female but also reflects his health. Scientists have found that healthy roosters have large and bright combs, while sick birds have smaller and duller ones.

Similar properties may also be present in other birds. If this is the case, then the ornaments on the bodies of animals serve not only for aesthetics but also for demonstrating the health status of the male. From an evolutionary perspective, it is more advantageous for females to choose a healthy partner.
