How long can a dog go without food and when should you consult a veterinarian?
Dogs can go without food for three to five days if they continue to drink water. However, this does not mean you should wait that long if you notice your pet is not eating. If your dog usually has a good appetite and suddenly loses interest in food, this is a serious signal. Missing more than two meals is a clear reason to consult a veterinarian.
A dog can survive longer without food than without water. Dehydration in these animals occurs very quickly. If your pet does not drink for an entire day, you must seek veterinary care immediately. An animal that is not receiving water can be in critical condition.
Watch for the following signs of dehydration in dogs:
labored breathing;
loss of appetite;
dry nose;
dry, sticky gums;
pale or bright red gums;
thick saliva;
loss of skin elasticity.
The reasons a dog may not drink depend on its physical and emotional state. The pet may be experiencing anxiety, stress, dental issues, or it may be a reaction to a vaccination. In any case, only a veterinarian can make a diagnosis.
What to Do If Your Dog Is Picky About Food
If your dog does not want to eat what you offer, veterinarians recommend the following actions:
Try adding a little meat to your dog's diet. Do this gradually so that your pet does not refuse to eat food without meat in the future.
Soak dry food in low-sodium chicken or beef broth.
Warm your dog's food (dry or wet) in the microwave.
Feed your dog at the same time every day to establish a routine.
Do not give too many treats.
Use puzzle toys for feeding to make mealtime more engaging.
