For protection against pests and as a fertilizer.
Lime is widely used in horticulture. For example, a solution of slaked lime (calcium hydroxide) is used for whitewashing trees and spraying plants to protect them from pests. In addition, lime is included in specialized products designed to combat plant diseases. For instance, the well-known Bordeaux mixture is a solution of copper sulfate in lime milk.
Lime also serves as a fertilizer — it is recommended to be added to soil with high acidity.
