The number of sneezes in a series can reach three, four, or even more if the irritant is not removed from the surface of the mucosa, such as pollen in the case of allergies.
Additionally, a tissue reaction to irritation may occur along with the sneezing reflex: the mucous membrane swells, which reactivates the receptors.
After several sneezes, the tissue reaction reaches its peak, and the brain reduces the sensitivity of the receptors — sneezing stops.
