First Aid for Stroke: Doctor's Advice Before the Ambulance Arrives

The effectiveness of stroke assistance is maximized within the therapeutic window — three to four hours from the onset of the first symptoms. How can you support a loved one before the ambulance arrives? Neurologist Marine Tanashyan shared insights on this.

1. Remember or note the exact time the stroke symptoms appeared.

2. Measure blood pressure and pulse, and record the results. If the systolic pressure exceeds 200 mm Hg, administer an antihypertensive medication. If it is below 200 mm Hg, do not take any action, as lowering blood pressure is not recommended during the acute phase.

3. Ensure the patient is in a comfortable position. Place them on their side, slightly elevating their head, remove or loosen any constricting clothing (collar, belt, scarf), and open a window. If the person is cold, cover them with a blanket.

4. Do not attempt to give them something to drink, eat, or force them to stand. If there is a swallowing dysfunction, they may choke. Attempts to stand may lead to falls and additional injuries due to impaired coordination.

5. If you doubt the speed of the ambulance's arrival, try to transport the person to the nearest hospital yourself. The main task is to ensure safe transport and the immobility of the patient.
