A Medic Explained Which Diseases May Be Linked to Money

Candidate of Medical Sciences Andrey Sakharov spoke about the necessity of washing hands after transactions with cash or cards.

“Money, coins, and plastic cards are considered some of the most dangerous carriers of pathogenic microorganisms. They can harbor even potentially dangerous bacteria. For example, Staphylococcus aureus, which can cause sepsis, pneumonia, and meningitis,” noted the specialist.

According to the doctor, viruses can survive on paper and plastic money for several days. For instance, the coronavirus can remain on paper bills for 3–4 days, and on plastic cards for up to nine days.

“When using a card, there is a risk of virus transmission while entering the PIN code. The safest option is contactless payment. In any case, do not forget to wash your hands thoroughly after any contact with money and cards, as well as to disinfect phones and other devices,” the doctor concluded.
