When Should You Start Preparing Garden Beds in Spring?

By analyzing the weather conditions in your region over the past few years, you may notice that the soil does not always mature at the same time.

Spring may arrive with a delay of two to three weeks or, conversely, earlier, and in the latter case, the soil also warms up faster. Sowing in cold soil not only leads to sparse seedlings but also requires additional costs for plant and soil care.

After tilling, the moist soil becomes heavily compacted, affecting not only the top layer but also the subsoil layer. This requires significant effort to provide the upper layer with oxygen, which is necessary for both the roots and soil microorganisms. Soil compaction also increases its resistance to root penetration, reduces overall and non-capillary porosity, and worsens water, air, nutrient, and thermal regimes. Repeated loosening of the soil during the growing season cannot correct the mistakes made during spring preparation.

To determine if the soil is ready for processing, perform the following test: take a handful of soil, squeeze it in your fist, and throw it from chest level. If the soil falls as a clump, it means it is too early to dig; if it crumbles to dust, it is too dry; and if the clump slightly falls apart, it is time to start digging and sowing.
