How does a hot shower help berry bushes in early spring?

With the arrival of early spring, the first pests begin to appear on gooseberry, blackcurrant, blackberry, and raspberry bushes in gardens and vegetable plots.

To combat them, gardeners resort to the method of a hot shower — pouring boiling water over the bushes. This procedure effectively destroys dormant pests and helps eliminate spores of powdery mildew and other fungal diseases.

However, it is important to know how to properly carry out this procedure.

How to properly perform a hot shower?

For example, to protect gooseberries from pests, it is necessary to scald the entire bush with boiling water. It is best to carry out this procedure during the period of vegetative dormancy. The water temperature for treating berry bushes should not exceed +80 degrees for gooseberries and currants, while for raspberries, +55–60 degrees is sufficient.

It is recommended to add copper sulfate, potassium permanganate, and caustic soda to the boiling water in the required proportions. Boiling water is best passed through a watering can with a fine sieve and then sprayed on the branches of the berry bush using a sprayer.

Additionally, during this time, it is essential to moisten the soil under each treated bush.

It is important to constantly monitor the water temperature, as too low values may result in no effect, while too high values pose a risk of burning the plant.
