American researchers conducted an analysis and concluded that household chemicals pose a danger to the brain. They can be a cause of neurological diseases such as multiple sclerosis and autism spectrum disorders. This is reported by the journal Nature Neuroscience.
Experts have determined that some household cleaning agents have a specific effect on oligodendrocytes — specialized brain cells that form a protective sheath around nerve cells. The loss of these cells can lead to multiple sclerosis and other neurological disorders.
Additionally, scientists were able to identify hazardous substances that negatively affect the human brain and categorized them into two classes: organophosphorus flame retardants and quaternary ammonium compounds. These substances are found not only in personal care products and household chemicals but also in electronics and furniture.
