There is an opinion that intense laughter can cause fainting. Is this really the case?
The probability of such an event does exist, although it is low. As noted by physician Irina VASILEVICH, intense laughter can lead to a sharp drop in blood pressure, which, depending on individual characteristics of the body, could theoretically cause fainting. However, such cases are generally not life-threatening, and a person usually regains consciousness within a few minutes without the need for external assistance.
American cardiologist Todd COHEN also emphasizes that laughter can trigger a sudden spasm of the vocal cords, known as laryngospasm or choking. This condition can occur if a person does not receive enough oxygen while laughing. Nevertheless, such cases are exceptional.
