How to Grow Brussels Sprouts?

Brussels sprouts have high requirements for soil fertility and mineral nutrition conditions.

Optimal conditions for its growth are created in cultivated light and medium loams with a pH level of 6.5 to 7.5. The crop responds well to the application of organic fertilizers, which should be applied in the fall or under preceding crops. In the spring, it is recommended to apply only compost for Brussels sprouts; fresh organic fertilizers are not advisable in this case.

On moderately cultivated soils, mineral fertilizers are applied in the following proportions: 15-18 g of nitrogen (N), 5-6 g of phosphorus (P), and 20 g of potassium (K) per square meter. On light soils, the addition of magnesium fertilizers is also required in the amount of 5 g per square meter.

Foliar feeding with boron (1.2-1.5 g/l of boric acid per 10 m2), molybdenum (0.4-0.6 g/l of ammonium molybdate per 20 m2), and manganese (0.2-0.4 g/l of manganese sulfate per 20 m2) contributes to increased cabbage yield as well as higher sugar and vitamin content. Brussels sprouts respond positively to fertilization, so it is recommended to apply most of the nitrogen dose and half of the potassium in 2-3 feedings with watering, calculating 0.5-1 liter per plant. The best forms of fertilizers for root feeding are urea and potassium chloride.
