What unites gold leaf and puff pastry?

The process involves creating thin layers of one material separated by layers of another. Gold leaf, which consists of gold foil sheets with a thickness of 0.1 to 1 micrometers, has been made for 3000 years through many hours of manual hammering. During this process, the "booklet" of gold sheets gradually thins out, while being separated by layers of the peritoneum.

Puff pastry is prepared in a practically similar manner, but instead of a hammer and anvil, a table and a rolling pin are used. The rolled-out dough is generously smeared with butter, folded into an envelope shape, and rolled out again so that during baking, the layers of dough separate, forming a light and crispy pie.

In the production of both dough and gold leaf, thermal treatment is applied: in the first case, the foil is baked to increase its plasticity, while in the second, the dough is frozen to solidify the butter.
