Longevity expert Dan Buettner claims that residents of 'blue zones'—regions with the highest life expectancy—share similar traits not only in diet and daily routines but also in hobbies. In his opinion, gardening unites many centenarians.
“In every 'blue zone,' almost everyone who has reached 90 years or older has been gardening throughout their lives and continues to do so. This may be related to the low intensity of physical activity,” noted the specialist.
The researcher emphasized that working in the garden provides a certain level of physical exertion: a person bends down, squats, digs, and carries objects. However, according to Buettner, the main advantage of gardening lies in the motivation. People are eager to grow what they have planted more quickly.
“This gives you the incentive to go outside every day to weed, water, and harvest,” added the expert.
Moreover, gardening has a positive effect on mental and emotional well-being, reducing levels of stress, anxiety, and depression.
