Why Are Some Garden Cucumbers Bitter?

The harvest turned out to be quite good. But the question arises: why are some of them bitter?

You are likely growing several varieties of cucumbers. Therefore, some varieties may have bitterness in their fruits, while others do not. Depending on this, cucumbers are classified as bitter, slightly bitter, and non-bitter.

The appearance of bitterness is significantly influenced by natural conditions—sharp temperature fluctuations and lack of moisture. Varieties that have a genetically fixed trait of non-bitter fruit are less susceptible to environmental influences, and their fruits remain sweet.

When purchasing seeds of various varieties, it is important to understand what purposes they will be used for. Most often, cucumbers grown in protected soil, especially long-fruited ones, are intended for making salads, as well as for short-term sterilization and pickling.

The best option is a universal cucumber grown in open soil, which is suitable for both fresh consumption and for pickling and preserving. This is the one you should prefer.
