Experts recommend defrosting the refrigerator the traditional way: leaving it to thaw overnight.
However, many resort to unusual methods that allow them to speed up the defrosting process. For example, some housewives use a hairdryer to blow on the ice. Specialists explained how safe this method is for both the appliance and the person.
“The airflow from the hairdryer is quite hot. This can damage the refrigerator's components. For more effective defrosting, it is better to pour water on the ice from the tap. And under no circumstances should mechanical means, such as a knife, be used,” said Oleg DRANITSKY, director of the household electrical appliance testing laboratory.
Moreover, using a hairdryer to defrost a refrigerator can also be dangerous for the housewife herself, claims physicist and science popularizer Dmitry POBEDINSKY. “If you blow the hairdryer on the refrigerator from a distance, it is not dangerous for a person. However, if the hairdryer is placed inside, water droplets may get on the device, leading to a short circuit. If a person touches the refrigerator at that moment, there is a risk of electric shock,” explains Pobedinsky.
