How to Properly Plant an Apple Tree Seedling?

Tips from agronomist Alexander Khorobrovets.

— The seedling is placed in the planting hole so that the root collar (the area where the trunk transitions to the roots) is 4–5 cm above the ground level. This is necessary so that after the soil settles, the root collar will be at the surface level.

After placing the tree in the hole, it is important to carefully spread the roots. Then, the soil should be compacted with hands, and as the hole fills, with the foot. The tree should be planted firmly enough that it cannot be pulled out without significant effort.

To prevent the tree from swaying in the wind, it should be tied to stakes immediately after planting using a soft tie, allowing for free lowering as the soil settles. A small depression should be made at the base of the trunk, and 2–3 buckets of water should be poured into it. After the water is absorbed, the depression should be filled with soil, compost, or peat to a depth of 8–10 cm.
