A sleep specialist explained how lack of sleep affects weight gain

Cognitive-behavioral therapist and sleep specialist Alexey Melekhin noted that people suffering from chronic sleep deprivation tend to choose unhealthy foods and are prone to overeating, which ultimately leads to weight gain.

 

To date, there is no definitive explanation for why lack of sleep affects appetite; however, several hypotheses have been proposed. One of them suggests that sleep disturbances at the cortical level cause changes in the functioning of the nervous system responsible for regulating appetite and food choice.

There is also an opinion that lack of sleep and other sleep disorders can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction, which are often accompanied by regressive forms of behavior, such as bad habits and overeating.

To prevent gaining extra pounds, Melekhin recommends increasing physical activity and paying attention to hydration. In cases of chronic sleep disturbances, it is advisable to consult a specialist.
