Why were mainly five- and nine-story buildings constructed during the Soviet era?

In the 1950s and 1960s, when the housing issue was particularly acute, five-story buildings became the optimal solution: their construction was economically advantageous, as the regulations of the time did not require elevators and garbage chutes. Moreover, "panel buildings" were constructed quickly.

By the way, the technology of panel construction is not a Soviet invention. The USSR acquired a license for the mass production of concrete products from the French engineer Raymond Camus.

By the early 1970s, according to architect Ruslan KIRINCHANSKY, the first buildings of the II-18/9 series appeared - single-entrance block towers with one elevator.

The prevalence of nine-story buildings was explained by the limitations of fire-fighting technology at the time: the fire ladder could not reach higher than 27-30 meters.
