I have sandy soil at my summer house. How can I improve it for growing apple and pear trees?
Gardener and agronomist Alexander KHOROBROVETS shares his experience:
- Some gardeners, whose plots are located on sandy soils, lay a layer of clay 5-8 cm thick at the bottom of the hole before planting, which helps to better supply water to the plants. This method can be slightly modified.
For autumn planting, compost is prepared in the spring by mixing clay with pond silt and manure. For one part of soil, two to three parts of manure are taken. This compost needs to be mixed at least twice during the summer. To accelerate the maturation process, 2-3% of lime by total weight can be added. The compost is laid at the bottom of the hole before planting in a layer of 2-3 cm. Then, the soil taken from the hole is mixed with fertilizers, leveled, and a second layer of compost is laid.
After that, the soil is again filled in, and compost is placed on top. Thus, three layers are formed in the hole at depths of 60, 40, and 20 cm, which retain water and prevent the leaching of mineral layers downward.
