The Therapist Listed 5 Key Mistakes in Treating Cold Diseases

The belief that a cold is caused by hypothermia still exists today, and its treatment is surrounded by many myths. Therapist A. Lavrishchev spoke about the mistakes people make in treating cold diseases.

A cold is commonly referred to as a respiratory illness caused, as was previously believed, by the body's hypothermia. Scientists now know that this condition is caused by a viral (sometimes mixed with bacterial) infection of the respiratory tract.

Common mistakes people make in treating a cold:

Not getting vaccinated. Currently, vaccination is the only reliable method of preventing influenza and COVID-19. It is important to understand that it works effectively at the population level, but for each individual, it only reduces the risk of infection. It is never too late to get vaccinated.

Using antiviral medications. Currently, there are no antiviral drugs that effectively combat all acute respiratory viral infections (ARVI). Yes, there are medications for influenza and COVID-19, but they are not active against other viruses and can only be used after receiving a positive result from a rapid test for these diseases.

Taking antibiotics without indications or for preventive purposes. Such medications should not be taken without appropriate tests and a doctor's recommendation.

Enduring high fever when feeling unwell. It is important to consider one's condition. If health worsens at just 37.1°C, then it is necessary to reduce even that temperature; if 38.6°C is tolerated well, then antipyretics may not be needed.

Not taking cold medications during pregnancy and lactation. In fact, there is no need to suffer in such cases. There are now many medications that pose no danger to pregnant and breastfeeding women. So, it is simply necessary to consult a good doctor.
