Folk Omens on January 20 — John the Baptist

On January 20, the Orthodox Church commemorates the Assembly of the Holy Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist of the Lord John. This holiday follows immediately after the Baptism of the Lord and is dedicated to the memory of John the Baptist, who played a key role in the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River.

The word "cathedral" indicates the joint glorification of John the Baptist by all believers. The holiday emphasizes the greatness of John's mission as the Forerunner, his role in the baptism of Christ, and the preaching of repentance.

John was miraculously born to elderly parents, Zacharias and Elizabeth. His birth was foretold by the angel Gabriel. From a young age, he lived in the wilderness, leading a strict ascetic life in preparation for his mission. John preached in Judea, calling people to repentance and baptism, which symbolized spiritual cleansing.

His sermons condemned injustice and vices. He openly denounced King Herod Antipas for his unlawful marriage to Herodias, for which he was arrested and subsequently beheaded at Herodias's request.

His sermons on repentance and baptism for the remission of sins prepared people for the coming of the Savior. He not only baptized Jesus but also witnessed the manifestation of the Holy Trinity: the voice of God the Father, the dove symbolizing the Holy Spirit, and the Son of God receiving baptism.
