How to Protect Yourself from Burnout Ahead of the New Year

By the end of the year, people accumulate physical and emotional fatigue, and the symptoms of burnout become increasingly noticeable. In the midst of pre-New Year hustle, this condition can throw one off balance and spoil the holiday. Psychologists offer tips on how to avoid this.

According to the definition by the World Health Organization (WHO), burnout manifests through three main symptoms: fatigue, loss of empathy, and decreased work productivity. Additional signs indicating burnout include distractibility, difficulties in processing information, anxiety, and a desire to be alone.

This condition is most often observed in perfectionists—people who have an overwhelming drive for perfection in everything. To cope with burnout, especially ahead of the New Year, it is important to heed the recommendations of professional psychologists, which will be suitable not only for perfectionists but for most of us.

First of all, it is advisable to categorize all pre-New Year tasks into several categories: top priority and mandatory, non-urgent and minor, mandatory but not urgent, as well as urgent but not critical.

It is also important to determine which of these tasks can be delegated to others. This will help reduce the to-do list and lessen the pressure of obligations.

As for strategic goals, it is better to break them down into smaller tactical tasks that are easier to accomplish within a day, week, or month. This will help avoid feelings of overwhelm. For example, grocery shopping for the New Year's table should take place not in one day, but over the course of a week.

Results from a systematic review of studies conducted in 2022 showed that regular breaks throughout the day significantly improve concentration, well-being, and productivity.

At the same time, it is important to minimize distractions. For instance, try to use your phone less frequently. Psychologists from The Conversation state that a person handles tasks much more effectively when their mobile phone is at the bottom of their bag rather than in their pocket.
