Seven Items You Should Not Wash with Water

Cleaning without water may seem impossible, but in some cases, it can cause harm. Let's consider which items require special care to avoid damage and extend their lifespan.

Leather Products

Leather is extremely sensitive to water exposure: when wet, it can swell, and after drying, it may crack and become stiff. Instead of washing with water, it is recommended to use special leather cleaning products that gently remove dirt and stains while preserving the material's structure.

Wooden Furniture

Excessive water on wooden surfaces can lead to deformation, swelling, and even mold formation. For cleaning wooden furniture, it is better to use a dry soft cloth or specialized wood care products. This will help preserve the finish and prevent damage caused by moisture.

Electrical Appliances

The combination of water and electricity poses a danger. Washing electrical devices such as toasters, blenders, or coffee makers under running water can lead to short circuits or electric shocks. Instead, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for safe cleaning methods, which typically include using a damp cloth and specialized products.

Cast Iron Cookware

Water can promote rust formation on cast iron and reduce its non-stick properties. It is best to clean cast iron cookware with a brush or scraper using a small amount of salt to remove food residues. After that, apply a thin layer of vegetable oil to the surface for protection.

Electronic Devices

Smartphones, tablets, laptops, and televisions should not be washed with water. Moisture can damage sensitive components and cause malfunctions. To remove dirt and stains, use a microfiber cloth or special wipes designed for cleaning electronics.

Books

Water can cause irreversible damage to books, resulting in pages becoming warped, sticking together, or developing mold. Instead of using water, gently remove dust from books with a soft brush or cloth. If you find stubborn stains, it is advisable to consult a professional book conservator.

Wool and Silk Fabrics

Water can lead to shrinkage and deformation of items made from delicate fabrics such as wool and silk. To maintain their quality, it is preferable to use dry cleaning or spot cleaning with a specialized solvent.
