The expert group of the Japanese Ministry of Health has prepared a draft recommendation for safe alcohol consumption for the citizens of the country for the first time.
To reduce the risk of diseases related to an unhealthy lifestyle, the daily alcohol limit should not exceed: for men — 40 grams of pure alcohol, and for women — 20 grams of pure alcohol.
Defining a safe dose of alcohol: calculations for various beverages
20 grams of pure alcohol is contained, in particular, in a half-liter bottle or can of beer, in a 180-milliliter cup of sake, in half a glass (100 milliliters) of strong (25%) alcohol, in two glasses (200 milliliters) of wine, or in a double shot (60 milliliters) of whiskey.
The draft recommendations emphasize the need to minimize alcohol consumption, as recent research shows that even small doses of alcohol increase the risk of hypertension, colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer in men, and stroke in women.
The Japanese Ministry of Health plans to gather public opinions and publish the final version of the recommendations at the end of March 2024.
