Orchids are considered delicate plants, but most problems arise from improper care. We analyze six of the most common mistakes and explain how to easily fix them so that your orchid can once again delight you with its lush blooms.

Overwatering

Overwatering is the most common mistake when growing orchids. Many believe that tropical orchids need constant moisture, but in reality, their roots are adapted to brief wetness and quick drying.

Too much water causes root rot, which gradually kills the plant. To avoid this, water the orchid about once a week, only when the potting medium has dried out. A clear plastic pot will help monitor the condition of the roots: bright green roots are wet, silvery-white roots are dry. You can also check the soil with your finger before watering.

Incorrect Pot

Using a pot without drainage holes will lead to water stagnation and root death. It is very important to choose containers with drainage holes. You can place a plastic pot with drainage inside a decorative pot and remove it for watering.

Insufficient Light

Orchids need 6 hours of bright, indirect light per day. Many place their plants in the center of the house, where there is little light, which hinders their growth and flowering. If there is not enough natural light indoors, you can use special LED grow lights.

Inappropriate Potting Mix

Regular soil retains too much water and does not allow the roots to breathe. Orchids need air circulation around their roots, so it is better to use a bark-based mix that provides drainage. Pure sphagnum moss is not recommended as it retains too much moisture.

Incorrect Fertilization

Too much fertilizer can damage orchid roots. Use a balanced houseplant fertilizer in a weak solution (10% of the norm) once a week in spring and summer. Stop fertilizing from October to early spring. Once a week, flush the plant with water to wash away salt residues that can slow growth and cause brown leaf tips.

Insufficient Humidity

Many orchids are native to the tropics and require humid air. If the humidity is too low, flowers drop, and leaves become wrinkled or yellow. To maintain optimal humidity (50–80%), you can use a tray with pebbles and water under the pot. As the water evaporates, a comfortable microclimate is created for the plant.
