Growing Persimmons and Other Exotics: Top 15 Crops for the Winter Season

Although the new gardening season is still far away, many gardeners nostalgically recall the past summer and begin to arrange their gardens on windowsills and other free spaces. Some of them do not limit themselves to simple crops but strive to grow exotics that cannot thrive in their summer cottages. The variety of such plants expands every year. What contributes to this trend, and what exotics can be grown in an ordinary apartment without turning it into a tropical greenhouse? We discuss this with an expert.

Mikhail Vorobyov, agronomist, shares his experience:

— Among the heat-loving fruit plants that can yield a good harvest at home with minimal care are apricot, orange, lemon, mandarin, peach, and persimmon. Their seeds germinate easily in pots. However, there can be some difficulties with mandarins. This is because mandarins belong to the hard-to-germinate plants, and for planting, it is necessary to choose the largest seeds only from ripe and soft fruits. The selected seeds should definitely be soaked in water to swell, and when planting, they should be buried no more than 3 centimeters.

Today, in addition to those already mentioned, the list of plants that can be grown in an apartment can include cherry plum, avocado, pomegranate, grapefruit, cornel, kumquat, lychee, medlar, and mango.

By the way, mango usually does not grow taller than two meters at home (in the wild, this tree can reach 19-20 meters), so it is recommended to plant the seeds directly in larger pots, as mango does not like to be transplanted.
