On October 2, Christians remember the martyrs Trofim, Savvaty, and Dorimedont. The saints suffered martyrdom during the reign of Emperor Probus in Rome.
Christians Savvaty and Trofim found themselves at a pagan festival, where they fervently prayed to God while observing the chaos created by people. The governor noticed this and summoned the saints for interrogation. The men refused to offer sacrifices to idols, for which they were tortured, during which Savvaty passed away.
Trofiм was sent to a notorious executioner known for devising unbearable tortures for his prisoners. While in captivity, Trofim was visited by a secret Christian named Dorimedont. Upon learning this, the executioner threw both of them to be devoured by wild beasts, but the saints remained alive and unharmed. They were then ordered to be beheaded.
Savvaty was considered the patron of bees, and from this day the bee nine-day period began. During this time, work was usually done to collect honey and prepare hives for winter. In some places, a honey festival was even held, where honey was the main dish on the table. Honey has always been regarded as an excellent remedy for many ailments.
Also, on October 2, Trofim's Evenings took place — a holiday during which unmarried girls sought suitors.
