Study: Beet Juice is More Effective than Mouthwashes for Oral Care

Mouthwashes are popular hygiene products used to combat bacteria. However, many of them contain alcohol and other components that may not be suitable for regular use. Those seeking more natural alternatives should consider vegetable juice.

Scientists from the University of West Scotland have found that nitrates found in fresh vegetables have fewer side effects and are more beneficial for oral health compared to common mouthwashes. In an experiment involving professional athletes who consumed special high-sugar energy gels during competitions, it was established that beet juice effectively protects teeth from acid in sports drinks and sugary gels, reports novochag. Thus, it can be considered as a means of preventing cavities.

However, rinsing the mouth with beet juice is not recommended, as it may lead to staining of the enamel. Instead, it is better to use other leafy vegetables, such as spinach and cabbage, which are also rich in nitrates. These substances in the mouth are converted into nitric oxide, which helps suppress the growth of harmful bacteria and reduce acidity, thereby neutralizing the risks of cavities and gum diseases, as explained by the Daily Mail.

Moreover, nitrates do not have serious side effects that occur with the use of chlorhexidine mouthwashes. The latter kills both harmful and beneficial bacteria, which, according to scientists, leads to increased resistance to antimicrobial agents — a pressing issue that limits doctors' choices in prescribing effective treatments.

Nitrates, in turn, help restore a healthy balance between beneficial and harmful microorganisms in the mouth. Previous studies have shown that consuming lettuce juice for two weeks reduces gum inflammation and increases the number of beneficial bacteria in patients with gum diseases. Thus, while beet may not be the ideal choice, it still represents a healthy alternative for oral care.
