Why There Is a Craving for Unhealthy Food During Illness

In the cartoon "The Heaviest Sick Man," Carlson explained to Little Boy that a huge cake, a mountain of chocolate, a bag of candies, and jam were necessary for his treatment. In reality, such "therapy" methods are not just the inventions of a cunning sweet tooth with a propeller. Many people really crave sweets, fast food, pickles, and other unhealthy foods during illness.

Chips, Soda, and Chocolate

A person's craving for certain foods, most often for a specific one, is called appetite. Unlike hunger, which arises as a reaction of the body to a lack of nutrients, appetite can manifest even with a relatively full stomach and is considered more of a psycho-emotional state than a physical one.

Appetite can vary depending on psycho-emotional state, the presence of trigger foods, illnesses (especially), and medication intake. For example, many people during illness do not feel like eating at all, as the body lacks the energy to digest food — all forces are directed at fighting pathogens.

However, there is also the opposite situation, where appetite is maintained or even returns, often desiring not easily digestible foods, but something clearly harmful or at least heavily processed.

According to nutritionist Stephen Whisler, unhealthy food seems particularly appealing due to its bright flavor, rich aroma, and sensations in the mouth — the crunch of fries, the fizz of soda, and so on. The contrast of textures also plays a role: the same hamburger has a crispy crust, inside which are juicy meat, crunchy cucumbers, and thick sauces. Moreover, spices, sauces, and additives in fast food are not added by chance: they stimulate increased salivation, which keeps food in the mouth longer and activates taste receptors, making it more delicious.

Foods with bright flavors, especially from the fast food category, have one peculiarity: they create an illusion of nutrition. It seems that such food is so tasty precisely because it contains all the necessary vitamins and micronutrients. However, junk food melts away so quickly that it is constantly lacking, leading to the need to eat more. This is not accidental: large teams of specialists have worked for decades on this method of stimulating demand.

The reason can also be physiological: when the body begins to recover, it needs to replenish energy and nutrients that were lacking during the fight against infection. Since unhealthy food always contains sugar, the body receives the necessary energy. However, it is better to limit oneself to sweet tea, honey, or processed fruits. Excessively sweet products, as well as pickles, spicy, and sour dishes can irritate the throat and worsen coughing.

Additionally, during fever, vomiting, and diarrhea, the body loses a significant amount of fluids, salts, and electrolytes, which one wants to quickly replenish — this is aided by pickles and fermented products, and this is also why there may be a craving for fast food, which contains a lot of salt.
