Salads represent one of the most diverse categories of cuisine. There are countless salad recipes! However, in this vibrant palette of dishes, the Waldorf salad holds a special place as one of the most popular.
Pride of New York
Today, the Waldorf salad is famous thanks to the series 'Desperate Housewives'. However, its original recipe was presented to the public at the famous New York hotel 'Waldorf-Astoria'. The official author of the recipe is considered to be the hotel's maître d'hôtel, who published it in his cookbook in 1896.
Ingredients:
1 grapefruit
1 pear
1 green apple
romaine lettuce
2 tbsp orange juice
2 tsp orange zest
¼ cup fat-free yogurt
¼ cup light mayonnaise
1 cup seedless grapes
⅓ cup dates
¼ cup toasted pine nuts
Preparation:
1. In a separate bowl, mix the yogurt, mayonnaise, orange juice, and orange zest. Thoroughly combine all the ingredients.
2. Set aside large leaves of romaine lettuce. Chop the remaining leaves into small pieces. Peel the grapefruit, remove the white pith, and cut each segment in half. Core and dice the pear and apple.
3. In a bowl with the chopped romaine leaves, add the grapefruit, grapes, pear, apple, and halved dates. Then add the yogurt-orange dressing and mix all the ingredients thoroughly.
4. In a separate bowl, place the large leaves of romaine lettuce. Transfer the contents of the previous bowl onto them and sprinkle with pine nuts.
The Waldorf salad is ready! I'm sure it will turn out just as good as in a New York restaurant. Enjoy your meal!
