Foods to Avoid with Acid Reflux

Some people experience heartburn, difficulty swallowing, and a lump in the throat after eating. These symptoms indicate a condition known as acid reflux, which occurs when stomach contents enter the esophagus. There are several foods that can exacerbate symptoms and increase stomach acidity. Let's take a look at what should be removed from your diet.

High-fat foods stay in the stomach longer, increase its volume, and slow down the emptying process. This category includes:

* High-fat dairy products – cream, cheese, butter.

* Pork, lamb, as well as duck and goose meat.

* Fried dishes and fast food containing unhealthy fats.

Acidic Foods

These foods irritate the esophageal lining and promote increased gastric juice production, exacerbating reflux symptoms. It is necessary to exclude tomatoes and citrus fruits – oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruits, and pineapples – from the diet.

Caffeinated Foods

Caffeine is found in tea, coffee, and some carbonated beverages. It increases acid production in the stomach and can cause pain. Carbonated drinks also contribute to bloating and discomfort.

Trigger Foods

Some foods can trigger symptoms in certain individuals. These include:

Mint. This plant relaxes the muscles between the stomach and esophagus, allowing stomach acid to rise.

Chocolate. This treat can provoke acid reflux as it lowers the pressure on the esophageal sphincter, allowing stomach contents to flow back.

Garlic and onion. These pungent vegetables promote increased acid production in the body, causing heartburn symptoms.

Alcohol. Alcoholic beverages have a dual effect: they increase gastric acidity and relax the lower esophageal sphincter.
