High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke, and it can be reduced by increasing potassium intake.
Stroke is a serious and life-threatening condition that occurs when blood supply to a specific area of the brain is interrupted.
The cause can be a blockage of a blood vessel by a thrombus or a rupture of a blood vessel. There are many factors that contribute to an increased risk of stroke, such as smoking, obesity, high cholesterol levels, and diabetes.
“High blood pressure can lead to a stroke in several ways. It can promote the formation of blood clots in the brain and damage small blood vessels located deep within the brain tissue. Additionally, increased pressure raises the likelihood of a stroke due to bleeding,” notes therapist Irina Andreeva.
One way to lower blood pressure is to increase potassium intake.
Potassium helps relax the walls of blood vessels, which in turn helps reduce blood pressure. Increasing potassium intake through drinks is an easy way to positively impact your blood pressure.
Andreeva highlighted 7 potassium-rich drinks:
Plum juice (707 mg of potassium per cup)
Carrot juice (689 mg)
Tomato juice (556 mg)
Orange juice (496 mg)
Grapefruit juice (400 mg)
Milk (342 mg)
Apricot juice (286 mg).
For comparison, an average banana contains about 422 mg of potassium.
