Research by Scientists: What Nutrition Can Shorten Life by 10 Years

Avoid harmful eating habits to increase longevity. A new study by scientists reveals how to properly organize your diet.

Recent studies conducted by American scientists have demonstrated how significant nutrition is for longevity and which products have the greatest impact. For centuries, humanity has sought the secrets of eternal youth and longevity. Scientists are confident that they have discovered a powerful factor: proper nutrition. Unlike genetic predispositions or life circumstances, diet can be changed. Improper and untimely nutrition can significantly shorten life. German publication RND reported on which products and in what quantities should be present on our table.

What Nutrition Shortens Life: Who is at Risk?

In the scientific journal «Cell», American researchers Walter Longo and Rosalind Anderson published the results of their study. Thus, lovers of «calorie bombs» — hamburgers, chips, soda, and white chocolate — are definitely at risk. Scientists recommend limiting carbohydrate intake and practicing fasting more often, which will help minimize the risk of diseases and prolong life.

It is important to note that, according to researchers, the diet should look as follows: the optimal ratio of carbohydrates is from 45 to 60% from high-quality products. The remaining part should consist of a small but sufficient amount of protein, predominantly of plant origin, which should make up 25 to 35%.

Scientists' Recommendations for Longevity

In simpler terms, this means: «Consume plenty of legumes, whole grains, and vegetables; a little fish. Avoid red and processed meat, and minimize the consumption of white meat. Limit sugar and refined grains, but do not forget about a sufficient amount of nuts and olive oil, as well as a little dark chocolate.» These recommendations were voiced during the study. Dr. Longo added that eating should occur within 11–12 hours a day, with several fasting periods throughout the year.

If You Are Over 65 — Increase Protein Intake

Longo and Anderson emphasize that the anti-aging diet should be individualized. There is no one-size-fits-all solution suitable for both a 20-year-old and a 60-year-old with metabolic disorders. Factors such as gender, age, lifestyle, health status, and genetic factors must be taken into account. For example, people over 65 require more protein, the scientists assert.

«In old age, it is often difficult to get enough protein. A deficiency of this element can lead to loss of muscle mass and an increased risk of falls and fractures. Therefore, it is recommended to slightly increase meat consumption compared to usual recommendations,» says Kristina Norman, a researcher on aging issues from the German Institute of Human Nutrition.

What Affects Longevity?

Scientists note that there are many parallels with long-known recommendations for proper nutrition. The principles of healthy eating do not change every few years and remain largely unchanged. The new study merely confirms this knowledge.

The main advice is to consume less energy than is expended. The review shows that the quantity and quality of food play a decisive role in longevity.

Fasting. Scientists also noted that fasting can be beneficial for those who are unable to limit energy intake. In such cases, temporary abstinence from food can help restore the sensitivity of certain receptors in the body.

According to the study, the lifespan of even 60- and 80-year-olds can increase by several years if they follow several recommendations for healthy eating. For example, increasing the consumption of legumes, whole grains, and nuts will be most beneficial. As is known, improper nutrition, including excessive consumption of red and processed meat, shortens life, so it should also be avoided.
