Medical professionals are confident that a simple dietary change, such as adding strawberries to the daily menu, can significantly improve the health of elderly individuals.
A recent study has demonstrated that including this berry in the diet can significantly enhance cognitive functions and even lower blood pressure.
According to the publication Express, Dr. Shirin Khushmand and her team conducted a clinical study involving 25 healthy elderly individuals aged 60 to 70 years.
For eight weeks, the participants consumed 26 grams of freeze-dried strawberry powder daily, which corresponds to two servings of fresh berries. After that, there was a washout period lasting 4 weeks during which the participants did not take the supplement. They then resumed consuming the powder for the next 8 weeks.
During this period, the participants' cognitive abilities, cardiometabolic status, waist circumference, and blood pressure were measured.
The results were impressive
Those who included strawberries in their diet showed a 5.2% increase in cognitive processing speed by the end of the eight-week period. Systolic blood pressure also improved by 3.6%.
According to Dr. Khushmand, previous studies have already confirmed some benefits of strawberries for the cardiovascular system among various population groups, and the new experiment strongly supports these findings.
