Doctor: How to Properly Organize Nutrition for Gastritis and Which Habits to Avoid

The rules of nutrition for gastritis were discussed by therapist Irina Chernyavskaya.

– Gastritis is not a condition that can be eliminated solely with medication. To restore health, it is necessary to reconsider one’s habits, especially regarding diet, reports ganc-chas.

The diet for gastritis plays a key role. Improper nutrition during treatment can negate the efforts of doctors and the effectiveness of medications.

First and foremost, nutrition for gastritis should be regular. It is essential to eliminate snacks on the go and eating dry food. It is also important to avoid excessively long intervals between meals. It is recommended to eat at least 5 times a day, with an interval of 3 hours.

It is important to maintain a sense of moderation and avoid overeating. It is known that one should get up from the table with a slight feeling of hunger, as the signal of satiety reaches the brain with some delay – the feeling of fullness usually arises 10-15 minutes after finishing a meal.

Food should be thoroughly chewed: each piece is recommended to be chewed for 25-30 seconds. This promotes quicker satiety and benefits the stomach.

Preference should be given to simple foods: when suffering from gastritis, it is not advisable to prepare complex dishes with many ingredients. The simpler the food, the faster and easier it will be digested in the stomach.

It is not advisable to combine liquid and solid food in one meal, for example, broth and cutlet. It is also worth avoiding foods high in fiber, such as fresh cabbage, fruits, and berries with coarse skin. For healthy individuals, fiber is beneficial, but during an exacerbation of gastritis, the stomach will struggle to cope with such food.

Harmful for the stomach are chewing gum (especially before meals), carbonated drinks, fatty and fried foods, rich meat broths and jellied meat, strong tea and black coffee, candies, and chocolate.

Dietary dishes during the treatment of gastritis should contain minimal amounts of salt, and it is better to avoid spicy seasonings and spices. The therapeutic diet for gastritis should include sufficient amounts of protein, as well as vitamins B, C, and E. Another important condition is that the food should be soft.

Pureed soups, minced meat dishes, and liquid cereals are digested more easily than steaks and raw vegetables.

Diet for Different Types of Gastritis: What Can Be Eaten and What Is Forbidden

Gastritis with Low Acidity:

Allowed!

To stimulate the secretion of gastric juice in gastritis with low acidity, it is recommended to consume meat and fish broths more frequently in the first days after an exacerbation. After the acute pain subsides, pureed soups and liquid cereals can be introduced into the diet. Steamed cutlets made from fish or meat, boiled chicken, vegetable purees, cottage cheese, boiled eggs, and steamed omelets will be beneficial.

Not Allowed!

It is necessary to avoid all fatty and fried foods, vegetables rich in fiber, tough meats, smoked products, whole milk, any carbonated drinks, and fresh pastries made from rich dough (including bread).

Gastritis with High Acidity

Allowed!

In the first two to three weeks after an exacerbation, the menu should be very gentle. It is allowed to consume soups made from chicken broth with added crushed grains and milk soups. Milk lowers acidity, so it should not be excluded: low-fat milk can be added to tea or cereals.

Young vegetables, boiled or steamed, are allowed. It is best to make purees from them.

When the condition normalizes, soft-boiled eggs, fish, and lean meat – boiled, baked without oil and fatty sauces, or steamed – can be eaten. Like vegetables, meat and fish should be minced. The most suitable options are cutlets, soufflés, meatballs, or dumplings. Baked apples and berry jellies are also allowed.

Not Allowed!

In gastritis with high acidity, pancakes, rich pastries, and rye bread are prohibited. It is also advisable not to consume fatty and fried foods, dairy products, sausages, smoked products, and canned goods. Onions, cabbage, tomatoes, mushrooms, pickles, and marinades should be excluded, and the consumption of raw fruits should be limited.
