Why is it not recommended to consume juice from canned pineapples?

Fatima Khapon, a Spanish nutritionist, explains the dangers of the liquid contained in canned fruits, including pineapples.

In situations where it is not possible to buy fresh fruits and vegetables daily, frozen and canned products come to the rescue. While there are usually no problems with frozen goods (provided they are produced and stored correctly), one should approach the consumption of canned pineapples, peaches, and other fruits with caution.

It has been found that the liquid in such cans contains twice as much sugar as the fruits themselves. Sugar may be added artificially to extend shelf life or concentrated natural juice may be used. It is important to note that both options are not positive. Consuming large amounts of sugar, as well as empty calories, can lead to obesity and prediabetic conditions. According to a nutritionist, this also applies to packaged orange juice.

Fatima Khapon states that, with rare exceptions, juice from cans can be used in baking and sweet sauces. However, it is much healthier to simply pour out this liquid. Moreover, if the product does not have an “organic” label, the nutritionist recommends rinsing the fruit pieces under running water. This is because, to extend shelf life, in addition to salt and sugar, chemical preservatives may be added to the product, which can be harmful to health.
