Juice, Fish, and Meat: How Long to Safely Store Opened Canned Goods

We offer recommendations for the proper storage of opened canned goods of various types.

Canned products, whether homemade or store-bought, usually have a long shelf life due to their airtight packaging. However, what happens to the products after the can is opened, and how long can they be stored safely?

Juices

Generally, manufacturers recommend not storing an opened package for more than a day, even in the refrigerator. This is especially true for natural juices, which can start to ferment within 1-2 days.

Meat Cans

Opened canned meat in metal packaging retains its quality for a maximum of 2 days, while in glass it lasts about a week. The shelf life of homemade canned meat can be extended: to do this, open the can and remove the top layer of fat into a clean container. Then, take the required amount of meat, and pour melted fat over the remaining portion.

Fish Cans and Preserves

Leftover fish canned goods are recommended to be transferred to ceramic or glass containers. However, it is important to consider that the container in which the fish was stored was sterilized during production, while the new container may not meet these standards. Therefore, it is better to leave the fish in the tin can but try to consume it as quickly as possible.

Homemade Canning

Opened jars of pickled or marinated cucumbers, tomatoes, and similar products can be stored for quite a long time—up to 2 weeks. Nevertheless, it is important to monitor the condition of the product and check for mold.
