The Three Most Harmful Snacks on the New Year's Table and Their Healthy Alternatives

Many traditional treats prepared for the New Year's table are high in fats and calories.

Nutritionists Alena Denisova and Marina Maltseva shared recommendations on which snacks to avoid and suggested alternative options.

Sausages and Smoked Products

Most often, the New Year's table features a charcuterie board filled with salami, cervelat, and other types of smoked products. These items contain trans fats, sugar, preservatives, and other additives, making their consumption, especially at night, highly undesirable.

For those who do not want to deprive themselves of meat snacks on New Year's Eve, homemade boiled pork can be a suitable option.

Baked meat, sliced into small pieces, will be an excellent choice. Vegetables and tart-spicy sauces made from lingonberries, cranberries, or pomegranates will complement the snack perfectly.

Sandwiches with Caviar

The combination of butter and white baguette or loaf is not the best choice, especially if there are plenty of other calorie-dense treats on the table.

Instead, whole grain bread can be used as the base for sandwiches, and butter can be replaced with cream cheese.

Moreover, the flavor of cream cheese softens the saltiness of the caviar and helps eliminate a slight bitterness.

It is important to pay attention to the composition of the red caviar itself: a quality product should not contain refined oil or other additives besides salt.

Canapés

Popular combinations for canapés include white bread, sprats, and cucumber; white bread, smoked sausage, and cucumber; white bread, several types of cheese, and grapes.

As with sandwiches, the loaf can be replaced with whole grain or rye bread, and healthier, less processed ingredients can be used.

For example, you can prepare the following canapés:

bread — cream cheese — lightly salted fish — avocado;

bread — cream cheese — shrimp — lemon;

bread — cream cheese — tomatoes — hard cheese — olives;

bread — cream cheese — canned tuna;

bread — fresh cucumber — lettuce leaves — shrimp — olives.
