In a small 2022 study, researchers found that citric acid stimulates the secretion of gastric acid, which helps the body break down and digest food. Experts also note that drinking lemon water before meals promotes peristalsis—wave-like contractions that help move food through the digestive tract. However, more extensive studies are needed to fully understand the impact of lemon water on digestion.
